Sri Lanka, formerly known as “Ceylon” and as the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean” has a documented history that spans over 3,000 years. There are evidences however to suggest that Sri Lanka or then Ceylon, had pre-historic human settlements dating back to at least 125,000 years and possibly even as far back as 500,000 years. We also see in the history that Sri Lanka was known to travelers by a variety of names. Known by the ancient Greek geographers who called it “Taprobane” and Arabs referred to it as “Serendib.” Its geographic location and deep harbours made it of great strategic importance from the time of the ancient Silk Road.
This picturesque beautiful Island has many scenic locations that are very close to paradise. Visit Pearl’s Home Sri Lanka is located on the beautiful mountain top of Hanthana in the ancient Sinhala capital of Kandy. The biodiversity that inhabits this Island is an extreme beauty and is a gift by Mother Nature to the Sri Lankans.
The Esala Perahera is a symbolic Buddhist festival that consists of dances and richly decorated elephants held in Kandy during the month of August. Fire-dances, whip-dances, Kandian dances and various other cultural dances are integral parts of this festival.
Traditional Sri Lankan food & dishes are served on a plantain leaf or on a Lotus leaf. We also find many types of South Indian, Moor and Middle Eastern Food dishes. Further we find Dutch and Portuguese influenced food with the island’s Burgher community preserving their culture through traditional dishes.
